If so, how do you know whether or not you have the passion to motivate you on your journey? How do you know if you have the patience and the compassion needed to be successful in your chosen field?
Join one of our Medical Outreach teams to get a taste of the career that awaits you!
As a student, you will be mentored by coordinators and licensed practitioners, and while as a team you will provide medical/dental services to residents of "pueblos jovenes". Residents of these developing communities lack affordable access to healthcare, and other basic needs.
Your team will set-up a clinic in the middle of their community, and provide the residents with healthcare screening, medication, and public health seminars to arm them with ways to prevent food-borne illnesses, and other ailments. Our medical clinics run very efficiently as we separate each area of the clinic into different stations: H&P Station History and Physical While paired with a translator (as needed), the student interviews the patient to obtain their medical history and capture the medical reason for their visit. Vital Signs Station Blood pressure, Heart rate, Respiratory rate, Temperature, Weight, Height Under the supervision of licensed practitioners, students obtain vital signs on all patients. Students learn how to measure each vital sign during our workshops as well as on site. Labs Blood sugar levels, Cholesterol, Hemoglobin, Urinalysis, Pregnancy tests Students take turns volunteering in Labs under the supervision of licensed practitioners. Students learn how to administer each test during our workshops as well as on site. Treatment Room Observation Students get an opportunity to observe/shadow licensed practitioners as they screen and diagnose patients. Practitioners are expected to explain diagnosis and involve the student in their assessments. Pharmacy All medications given to patients free of charge Practitioners prescribe medications that we have readily available at our own pharmacy. Students learn about different medications and their functions, as well as how to write prescription instructions in spanish. Students provide instructions under the supervision of translators and licensed provider.
